INSPIRING MY EVERYDAY | Meet Casey-Lee

Welcome to the next instalment of interviews with some of the people in my life who inspire my everyday. See the first interview here.

I am grateful to have these amazing individuals in my life who are always encouraging and inspiring me to be the best version of me.

Meet Casey-Lee. My acupuncturist, naturopath, nutritionist, life coach, friend, inspiration and conscience.

Casey-Lee is awesome. She is beautiful inside and out.  With Casey-Lee’s guidance, my health recovery is miraculous and a little surreal to be honest.

Casey-Lee inspires me with her kind heart, her gentleness in life, and her commitment to honouring herself and her wellbeing.

So let’s find out a little bit more about this amazing woman.

1. Tell us a little about yourself in a few sentences.
I am an everyday woman living a simple life. I am also a natural health practitioner (Naturopath and Nutritionist) with a passion to inspire others to live their best self. My life is as busy as it has ever been with the launch of my new business and a baby on the way and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love life and love all things healthy.
2.     What is your favourite childhood memory that makes you smile?
Many of my favourite childhood memories seem to be in the kitchen! One of my favourites is helping my Gran bake fun treats, especially her ‘rock cakes.’ Looking back they really did taste like rocks but it didn’t matter because their was so much love in making them!

3.     What did you do before you trained to be a health practitioner, and what attracted you to this career?
I have always had an interest in health and was brought up with it being part of our family’s life but before I trained as a health practitioner I explored nursing, event management and fitness.
4.     You have recently launched Live Love Nourish. Can you tell us a little about it, and the driving force in creating Live Love Nourish?
Live Love Nourish is a health and wellness website that specialises in nutritionally designed recipes and programs. As our philosophy shares, LLN inspires you to “live the real you, love truly and deeply and nourish from the inside out.”
The concept behind the business is that to live a truly healthy and fulfilling life is to live your real, whole and genuine self; to love yourself truly and love others deeply and to nourish all of you from the inside out.
LLN particularly specialises in recipes that are free from processed ingredients with a focus on recipes that are gluten free, dairy free and sugar free.
I created Live Love Nourish as I wanted to share my passion for truly looking after your body with a wider community. Being online gives me a platform to essentially ‘share the love’ and offer inspiration to others that I hope supports them in living life to its fullest potential; filled with joy, harmony and health.

5.     Who is someone who inspires you and why?
Of course who else but mum! She is balanced, keeps me grounded and her love is endless. She lives true to herself, loves unconditionally and is the most genuine person I know. These qualities in mum inspire me to stay true to myself always.
6.     I know that you eat very well. Do you ever go crazy and have something that you know you shouldn’t eat, and what food would that be?
I love this question! To be honest, I tend to not eat foods that don’t leave me feeling good in my body as I’ve learnt its not worth it to feel my vitality being compromised. That said, I do love to go crazy with all things avocado! And I sure have gone nuts on nuts ;)

7.     What has been the most challenging thing in your life and what positive lessons have come from it?
One of the most challenging things in my life would definitely have to be the creation the Live Love Nourish website. When I first started the site I had a vision of what I wanted to do but had no idea how or what I needed to make it happen.  Every step was a challenge and a constant learning along the way. Whilst it was challenging it has also been incredibly empowering and rewarding.

Some of the greatest lessons that have come from it have been to trust, patience, to stay true to yourself and to never letting anything stop you from achieving your goals.
8.     On my own healing journey, the turning point was when I realised the key was in self love and self honour. What was the catalyst that lead you to bring more self love into your life?
It is music to my ears to hear you speak the words self-love and self-honour Sue!
It didn’t take me long to realise that you can only do so much at the expense of the body before self-love has to be the basis of all that you do. When self-love and self-honour become your foundations, trust me, you can do so much more with much more energy!

9.     You do your own public relations, photography, food styling, recipe development and testing, blogging, and you are a respected health practitioner. Is there something else you would love to learn how to do?
Gee, thanks Sue, that’s very kind of you! I am constantly learning and love to learn so I will always be ready to learn whatever is needed as the chapters unfold.
I would love to learn how to translate ideas into reality instantly ;)
10.  You and your partner are expecting your first baby any day now. I am over the moon for you both! What are you most excited about, and what are you most nervous about being a mum?
Thank you Sue! We are very excited to be expecting our first baby very soon. I am most excited to share all of life’s blessings with our little one and to watch her grow into her own unique self. I must say it is the ‘unknown’ of not knowing what to expect that can make me a little nervous but at the same time that is also exciting.

11.  Although you are taking a break from consultations whilst you focus on enjoying motherhood, what we can expect from Live Love Nourish in the future?
There is still so much more to come from Live Love Nourish and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!  On the cards next is our first e-book filled with delicious and healthy recipes.
Thanks so much Casey-Lee for sharing a little bit about yourself and LLN. Wishing you much love and best wishes for the safe arrival of your little one and I can't wait to meet her!

INSPIRING MY EVERYDAY | Meet my husband

Today I am kicking off a series of interviews with some of the people in my life who inspire my everyday.

I'd love for you to get to know these amazing people who support and inspire me to be the best me I can be.

Meet my husband. I call him Sammy.

He is a good person. Like, he really really is. He has the kindest heart, makes me laugh, is one of the smartest people I know, and he is the most awesomest Dad.

Sammy is a gun at design, especially branding design, and he has taught me everything I know. I can also confirm he has the patience of a saint.

My pixel pushing husband inspires me with his creativity, knowledge and his support and encouragement for me to design and document our lives.

So here’s a little Q&A with the hubby (ps. he's a man of few words so answers are short and sweet).

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself in a few sentences.

I am a dedicated father, husband, designer, and catcher of fish.

2. What is one of your favourite memories from your childhood?

I don't have any particular memories that stand out above others. But I remember travelling and holidays fondly. I particularly remember camping in the Whitsundays when I was about 11, and driving long stints in the car while looking at the countryside and landscapes.

3. What do you love most about being a Dad?

There isn't one thing I can isolate. It is the whole package of being a dad.

4. Your wife (me, lol) uses printed photos, papers, stamps and handwritten journalling to document your life as a family. On the other hand, your designs are digital or professionally printed. What are your thoughts on printed photos in albums versus printed photobooks?

I prefer something that is hand crafted rather than something that is mass printed. It has more personality and is more personal and meaningful.

5. Who is someone that inspires you and why?

It's my wife. Seeing her struggle so hard with her health everyday for nearly a decade, yet still push through everyday and not give up is the most inspiring thing I have ever seen in my life.

6. If money was no object, describe what your life would be like for you and your family?

Chillin' with the kids and wifey, holidays at home and overseas, and plenty of fishing and boating.

7. You ran your own design business for 10 years. What was the most rewarding and most challenging part about having your own business?

The most rewarding was to see that I wasn't a statistic that folded in the first 1-3 years. It was also rewarding running my business at home during the boys' formative years, and being there for them. The most challenging was the day to day business related activities. But mostly it was not having a consistent cash flow.

8. What has been the most challenging life experience you have had and what have you learnt from it?

Seeing my wife struggle with her health and being unable to significantly help, and struggling with the effects of that on myself and our family.

I learnt that despite how hopeless a situation may seem, things can change and get better.

9. Can you share one of your proudest moments?

When I saw my eldest son almost completely solve a rubiks cube at age 10 in under a minute, with no help. At that point I knew my son was already smarter than me.

10. Lastly, what would you say are your three most admirable qualities?

Good dad, loyal and rational.

Thanks for that Sammy! Aww, feeling loved right now.

Another guest coming soon so keep an eye out!

PRINTABLE FREEBIES | Handwritten Quote Cards for Project Life

Hiya! Just a quick post today to share a few FREE printables I had promised to those who had mentioned their interest on Instagram.

These filler cards I have handwritten and scanned for use in my Project Life Journal. You can read more here.

The card on the left is a quote I found that I really love because it is how I feel about my husband. Which is why I included the #iloveyou stamp from Kellie Stamps when I used it in my PL journal (pictured above). Unfortunately, I cannot find the author of the quote for inclusion.

The one on the right are words I wrote myself in a moment where I was letting self comparison impose on my own sense of self worth. We've all done that at some point, right?

Just click on the links below to download the cards.

Please let me know in the comments if you have downloaded the printables. Remember to tag me on Instagram (@themakingtable) if you share something you have created with the freebie cards as I would love to see it!

Happy Crafting everyone! xx

ON MY MIND | When your child says "I don't love you Mummy"

I take being a mum very seriously. I just want to be a good mother.

My relationship with my 10 year old has always been challenging. I blame myself for not being a "better mother" when he was a toddler. Granted I was dealing with my own health issues at the time, I still feel like I could have done more. Played with him more. Watched him more. Talked to him more. Read to him more. Argh! More available. More present.

When he was approaching 3 years old, I was pregnant with our second child and the shortfalls in our relationship started to show. But he's only 3 I hear you say!

As a 30-year old woman, I behaved like a child who's heart had been crushed when her best friend tells her she has a new best friend.

My 3 year old did not mince his words when he said to me "I don't love you mummy. I love Daddy". It was always "No! I want Daddy, not you Mummy!"

I was heartbroken. Defeated. Hurt. Did I mention heartbroken?

It took me a while to put my childish reactions aside and realise that I was looking at the definition of love from an adult's perspective, which is very different from my 3 year old's definition of love.

To a 3 year old, love is having fun! And Daddy is FUN! He did all the cool fun stuff like bike riding, playing soccer, flying him around like Superman, playing cars, building train tracks, bush walks...FUN boy stuff.

My parents separated when I was 5 years old. I don't have a relationship with my father so I can honestly say, I love my mum more. I have grown up not being able to understand how a child can love both parents equally.

I had an epiphany one evening during a conversation with my husband about his relationship with his parents. At first I could not get my head around how you could love both parents the same. It was not something I had ever experienced. Sounds strange doesn't it?

As we talked it finally clicked and I realised the way my husband loves his parents was the way I loved my Grandparents. I loved them both equally but I loved them both differently, each for who they were. I connected with Grandma differently from my Grandfather, but the love was the same.

Fast forward to today, and my relationship with my eldest child is still hard work. As I said at the beginning, I take my role as a mother very seriously. This means I am always reassessing how I handle situations, especially ones with the boys, and I look at whether I need to do anything differently, or better next time.

My son is stubborn. He is reserved and withdrawn. He won't laugh at my bad mum jokes. He challenges what I say. And he pushes my patience to the max. But he has a kind heart, and he wants to know he is loved and to be heard.

Last year, I decided it was time to work on actively building a stronger relationship and connection with my son. It had been easier to let it go and pretend everything was okay.

It is interesting how when you are ready and open to make a change, the universe will provide you with the resources to guide you in the right direction.

My boss gave me a parenting booklet from Hand in Hand to read. It goes into the importance of dedicated one-on-one time with each child and letting them guide the play/activity and conversation. This tells your child you are there just for them. I also started to come across a lot of blog posts about how LISTENING to your child is vital to better behaviour and improving parent-child relationships.

It seems obvious now, but I was consumed by my list of to-do's that I started to confused my priorities. To build a stronger relationship with Mr 10, I needed to listen with love. Listen with an open heart. I need to listen to him, and not just hear him.

I feel like I'm putting myself out there as a bad mother by even admitting to that.

We had a great conversation last night when I was saying goodnight to him at bedtime. He opened up about how he held back from telling me things because he thought I wouldn't be interested. I told him that I want to know EVERYTHING about his day because I miss out on 6 hours of his day when he is at school! I want details.

I could see his eyes soften, and the tone in his voice said he was ready to share. I listened as he told me this crazy story about school which had us both in hysterics. It's been a while since we laughed together like that. I want to create more of these moments with him.

MY PROJECT LIFE JOURNAL | More of January 2015

I had finished the January pages for my personal 2015 album, but I found a few extra bits and pieces I wanted to include.

Here's the first few pages if you want to have a look.

Because this 6x8 album is for me only, it is becoming more of a personal journal.

I'm a thinker and often over analyse how I can better handle situations with my boys (primarily my eldest child!), or how I can be organised enough to craft and still get a decent night sleep. Aside from that, I want to also include some of what's been on my mind during the month in my Project Life journal.

So here's the pages I finished last night. There's only one photo, with the rest being screenshots and journalling.

At first I wasn't sure how well that would work having only one photo, but it all goes back to the realisation I had in January. Stop comparing and I will be a lot happier! So that's how these words about happiness came about for me. It needs to go on my wall because I need to be constantly reminded.

Here's another close up.

Anyone interested in either of the handwritten quotes as a digital freebie? If so, leave me a note in the comments below and I'll see what I can organise!

Enjoy your weekend everyone! xx

Supplies: Digital journal cards from my online store {themakingtable.bigcartel.com). All Stamps from Kellie Stamps, Becky Higgins 6x8 album and protectors, "hello" embellishment from ScrAp This, Glitz Design Carpe Diem 6x6 paper pad from The Stamp Spot.

ON MY MIND | Keeping journals for my family.

I found this cute little card sitting on my keyboard Monday morning after I dropped the kids to school and ready to start my workday. I was blown away that my husband handmade and illustrated a card for me.

Of course the tear jerker was the sweet message inside. It's nice to be told you are loved, appreciated and to know that someone notices you for all that you are and do.

Which brings me to the journals I started as of 1 January this year, for the boys, my husband, and a gratitude journal for myself.

Journals from kikki k stamped with personalised stamps from Kellie Stamps.

I was inspired by this blog post by Becky Higgins.

I wanted to do more than my pocket page albums this year, and have more daily awareness and appreciation of the amazingness of my boys AND my husband. I want to have more awareness and appreciation of the amazingness of MY every day.

I document so much about the boys that I sometimes put my husband and myself last. This year I'm making changes with the journals and having an album just for me, here.

I have no rules about how often or how much I write in our journals. I write when I feel like it, which has generally been at least a few times a week. No pressure.

It has been less that two months into the year and reading back on previous entries is really awesome. When the boys read their journals, their smiles tell me they feel proud of themselves and happy I notice what they do.

Also, when it comes to my monthly Project Life albums, I already have stories recorded in the journals to jog my memory!

The other thing is when the boys read the things I appreciate about them, I hope it will pave the way for them to learn how to practice gratitude for the positives in their day as well.

My youngest may be starting to learn gratitude already. Here's a recent entry I wrote in his journal:

"You told me today was 'the best day ever'. I love your joy for all the wonderful things in your day. Without even being consciously aware of it, you practice gratitude like a pro. Your reasons for it being such an awesome day include: having casserole for lunch. Having swimming AND moving up a level. You were always a turtle and now you are a fish! I watched as you swam so beautifully like never before. I was bursting with pride. And then I made chicken rice paper rolls for your afternoon snack before Taekwondo which you said you LOVE more than casserole! And then at TKD you earned all the stripes that were being given today. You really did have an amazing day and I am so proud of you."

I have always loved this quote from the movie Shall We Dance (2004), and have shared it before:

"Your life will not go unnoticed,
 because I will notice it.
Your life will not go un-witnessed,
because I will be your witness"

The above quote sums up why I use Project Life. It is why I am passionate about memory keeping. It's why I am keeping these journals for my family. I want them to know that I notice them.

It's so easy to simply exist. I believe memory keeping, in all it's wondrous forms, helps us live more intentionally. And I love that.

PROJECT LIFE | New Release Dragonfly and Favourites Collection

It's been an interesting few weeks where I have been in my own head a little bit too much.

Lots of thinking...thinking...thinking.

About the future, the past, and making an extra effort to enjoy the every day moments.

It was one of the reasons why I started a mini album for myself. I needed a place to record my thoughts and things about me.

So here are my January 2015 pages in my personal album.

Only two pages for this month. Next month might only be one page or one pocket. I'm just going with the flow for this album.

Mr 7 showed me what he wrote on his first day in Grade 2. I love it for so many reasons.

I love reading what my children write -- especially free writing where they write about themselves. It's an amazing insight into their little personalities, what's important to them, and how they are feeling.

The 6x8 Project Life album that I am doing as a personal project is a place to share with the my boys who I am, what's important to me, what I am thinking about or struggling with. And most importantly, what makes me happy.

In my January 2015 pages, I am using cards from my new Dragonfly Collection of digital cards, available here.

I also designed one to use in the boys' individual 12 x 12 albums. I create one 12 x 12 pocket page each month for them, and I wanted journalling cards I could quickly complete and pop into their albums.

Here is the Favourites Collection, also available here.

Here's look at a few of the cards from the above Favourites Collection in use. I combined it with a personalised stamp from Kellie Stamps, and also one from her latest release.

Thanks for stopping by and having a read! Hope you all have an awesome week! xx

Supplies: Digital journal cards from my online store {themakingtable.bigcartel.com) and One Little Bird, Stamps from Kellie Stamps, Becky Higgins 6x8 album in light blue, and 6x8 Becky Higgins page protectors.

PROJECT LIFE | Sunset Play

I'm sharing a layout today that I quickly finished last night.

These photos of the boys at sunset were taken by my husband on his phone camera. I remember him showing me these photos and being blown away by the amazing colours he captured.

I especially love the photo of my youngest playing in water, taken from a distance. Looks like he's walking on water.

I decided not to use any filler cards, stamps or embellishments on this page because the photos by themselves are so pretty.

Well that's it from me today. I'm off to finish another page I have in progress!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

IN MY KITCHEN | Deliciously Addictive Granola

I love food. And it seems like a lifetime ago when I was able to eat whatever I wanted.

I confess to having McDonald's sausage muffins with an icy cold coke for breakfast every morning on my way to University, followed by either Pizza Hut, KFC or more McDonalds for lunch on the way home.

Fortunately about 14 years ago, my body told me in a not so polite way that it had taken all it could with my less than self loving eating habits, by blessing me with full on allergies and food intolerances. Yes, I did say fortunately and blessed. I feel lucky my body told me so early on what it didn't like.

Now, I eat whole foods that are nourishing for my body, admittedly sneaking in the occasional potato chip (I'm only human!).

I get excited about foods that are high in minerals. Like the humble pumpkin seed that is a little pocket rocket full of magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc and iron.

Bring in something that is nutritious, delicious and easy to prepare, and you've got my attention.

This granola is all that. I was inspired by this recipe here but took out certain ingredients to cater for my and my boys'  diets.

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1/8 cup sesame seeds (too much makes the granola bitter)
- 3/4 cup whole almonds
- 1 cup (maybe just under) preservative free desiccated coconut
- 2 tablespoons of honey*
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil*
- 1/8 teaspoon of himalayan sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

* 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons

STEP 1: Preheat fan forced oven to 150 C (fan forced). Pulse pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and almonds until they are roughly chopped. Do not over blend otherwise you will end up with flour.

STEP 2: Transfer into a mixing bowl. Add desiccated coconut, sea salt and cinnamon and combine well.

STEP 3: Melt honey and coconut oil in a small saucepan.

STEP 4: Add melted honey-coconut oil mixture into dry ingredients and combine thoroughly.

STEP 5: Line a large shallow baking dish with baking paper and spread mixture. Use the back of a tablespoon to make sure all the ingredients are nicely compacted. This will help the ingredients stick together in the baking process.

STEP 6: Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, remove from oven and give everything a stir. Use the back of a tablespoon and press down of the ingredients again before returning to the oven for another 10 minutes until golden brown. Make sure you keep a close eye on it in the last 5 minutes so it doesn't burn.

STEP 7: Allow to cool fully before storing in an airtight glass container.

It should keep well for a week but it doesn't last 2 days at my house. Serve with milk, or use as a topping for yoghurt/fruit or eat by the spoonful straight from the jar.

Hope you like it as much as we do! xx

Lesson Learnt | The Universe has it's own agenda

The Universe has a plan of it's own no matter how hard we try to steer things in a different direction, it has a way of doing what needs to be down.

Allow me to bore you with the details about how I came to this conclusion recently.

Back in October, Jake (7) jumped into the orthodontist's chair during one of Mr 10's appointments. I casually mentioned two of his bottom adult teeth had erupted behind his baby teeth. The orthodontist said that was perfectly fine, however, the adult upper central incisor (front tooth) that had erupted was not meant to be there.

What? What does he mean "not meant to be there"!!?

X-rays showed a supernumerary tooth -- an extra tooth shaped like a canine tooth, that I had assumed was just coming down crooked. It was the most favourable outcome as it meant a normal front tooth was waiting to come down. It also meant his adult canine tooth was not coming down in the wrong spot either.

Our family dentist was booked up for a month so I contacted my previous dentist. She suggested a Paediatric Dentist, something I had not even thought of doing. Ahh, already I felt better knowing he specialised in seeing littlies. After our initial consult, we scheduled the procedure to be done with a local anaesthetic (LA) and happy gas. Thank goodness! No mention of a General Anaesthetic (GA).

A week later, our family dentist phones me to suggest I see a very well respected oral surgeon which threw a spanner in the works. "Dr Mark" did my wisdom teeth under GA about 20 years ago so I knew the amazing reviews I googled were true. However, I was disappointed when told he does not provide gas with a LA. Noooo!! To me, the gas was crucial so my boy did not feel the the injections in such a sensitive area of the mouth. The gas was essentially the deal breaker in my eyes.

After a week of deliberation, I made a booking to see Dr Mark, as I knew I owed it to my son and myself to explore all options. Dr Mark greeted Jake with a big smile, kind words and open arms. They connected straightaway. Dr Mark agreed to do the procedure in his rooms with super strong numbing gel. Jake also said he preferred Dr Mark.

The day arrived. The numbing gel went on. Two seconds later, the tears came. At this point, Dr Mark declined to proceed for fear of traumatising our little man further, and suggested a GA in hospital. When my boy wasn't looking, more tears came...from me this time. The GA was what I had been trying so hard to avoid.

Surgery was booked for the end of the week, and in the 4 days leading up to it, my imagination ran wild with worst case scenarios. I also phoned the Anaesthetist with a lots of questions and then emailed him some more questions. Not paranoid, lol.

The big day arrived and I could not even eat. I am grateful to all my friends and their words of reassurance and encouragement beforehand. I felt very silly about my anxiousness but I was unable to control it. It was a bit nuts.

Waiting to go into theatre with Teddy.

So, back to why I believe the Universe has it's own plan.

Dr Mark explained afterwards that the tooth had a tiny hook shape at the tip of the root making it tricky to remove. This was not visible in the X-rays. Had it been done in his rooms, it would have been a "shamozzle". His word, not mine. Had we gone with the Paediatric Dentist, well...he may gotten further with the gas but would have faced the same challenge of a difficult to remove tooth (i.e. a shamozzle).

Mr 7 with Dr Mark afterwards. And Teddy too. I love this photo!

Everything went smoothly. In hindsight, I can see that despite every effort to avoid the GA, the Universe had its own plan to ensure the best outcome for our boy. And that was under a GA.

Jake was meant to cross paths with Dr Mark, who has an amazing presence and a natural ability to put us at ease. I believe he was the best person to look after our little guy. Not to mention how the boys thought he looked a little like Santa Claus lol.

Some things just work out the way it's meant to. No matter what we do. You just gotta have faith.

PROJECT LIFE | King Island

School holidays starts...NOW!

I am grateful that I am able to work from home over the September break.

A few weeks ago I started on selecting and editing photos from an afternoon at King Island. It sounds rather tropical because it's an "island" but really, it wasn't that exotic. That's not to say it wasn't an awesome afternoon with my three boys.

Starting with over 100 photos, I managed to cut it down to 23. There was little hope of fitting it all into 2 pages as originally planned. We were only there for 4 hours!

Memory keeping lesson I learnt from this spread:
I don't need to obsess about the journalling. I need only journal if there is something I want to say, or if a story needs to be told. There's no need to journal just for the sake of filling up a journalling card.

Today I'm sharing the first two pages:

Here's a close up:

Supplies: Goals stamp set from Kellie Stamps, Freebie "Adventure" card from Kelsey, Especially.

I like creating simple filler cards with stamps, and I'm a bit crazy for inspirational words words and quotes. I used two of the stamps from Kellie Stamps' Goals set here:

Thank you for having a look at my pages. I'll be back next week to share the rest!

In the meantime, enjoy your weekend! xx
